When it comes to vacation destinations, we all could use a deal right about now.
Gas prices are at a historic high and the price of just about everything else is climbing as a result. It’s enough to make you want to crawl in bed, pull the covers over your head and never go anywhere.
But wait. Perhaps I can help.
As a travel writer, my e-mail inbox fills regularly with press releases from people and publicists who want to get my attention. Here is some information that I’ve collected that could help you to stretch what’s left of those discretionary dollars:
A Stay-and-Hike package at Mammoth Mountain — Prices start as low as $76 per person, per night, double occupancy for a standard room at Mammoth Mountain Inn. The deal: The cost includes an all-day mountain bike rental for both people so that you can ride some of the more than 90 miles of trails in and around the village. Offer good through Sept. 22. Visit www.mammothmountain.com or call 1-800-MAMMOTH.
Golf package at Mammoth Mountain — If you love the links, check out California’s highest golf course (at 8,000 feet) at the new Westin Monache Resort. Stay in a deluxe suite and get one round of golf for $125 per person (double occupancy, must stay two nights). Offer good through Oct. 12. Visit www.westin.com/mammoth or call 866-716-8132.
Peddle, paddle and pamper yourself in Monterey with the Monterey Bay Inn’s Surf & Turf Package — Includes two nights in a harbor-view room, a full-day kayaking expedition on the bay (a marine sanctuary), an all-day bicycle rental for two, and a continental breakfast served on a private patio. All this for $309. Offer good Sunday through Thursday through Labor Day. (Taxes and gratuities not included.)
If you’re starting from scratch to find destinations, plane fare, hotels, cars or cruises, there are some Web sites that can help:
www.travelzoo.com — Deals on airfare, hotels, car rentals, cruises and more. It offers many links for both domestic and international travel, including last-minute deals like a Santa Barbara oceanfront hotel for $160 per night in the summer. Or how about a mid-week special at the Nick Hotel, a family resort in Orlando? The deal: a bedroom suite for $109 (regularly $259) plus a daily $50 food and beverage credit that can be used at any of the Nick Hotel’s seven restaurants.
www.sidestep.com — Type in dates and destinations and this site will search dozens of sites for plane fares, cruises, land vacations, hotels, cars and travel deals.
www.BudgetTravel.com — I’ve plugged this site and its magazine of the same name before, and I’ll do it again because it is such a good resource. Click on “Real Deals” on the home page to find offers that can really stretch your travel dollar. (Some are last-minute deals; many are not.) One great feature: the listings include an explanation of why the pricing is a good deal; for instance, it details what airfare alone would cost (as found on several other Web sites) and the extras you’re getting for the add-on price. The site also clearly states what the deal includes and what it doesn’t. Here are a few examples of current offerings: China, 10 days including airfare, for $1,800 (plus $130 to $160 for a visa); Paris, six days over the Thanksgiving holiday, airfare from San Diego hotel and continental breakfasts, for $929 (plus $210 for airport taxes); New York City for a girlfriend getaway, $219 a night per room at the Fitzpatrick Manhattan hotel (short walk to Grand Central Station and Fifth Ave.). Includes bottle of water, snack and coupons for discounts at Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Saks and more.
