SOLANA BEACH — June 30 has come and gone and with it went a $6 million grant that was considered key funding for Cedros Crossing, a mixed-used development slated for North Cedros Avenue between Lomas Santa Fe Drive and Cliff Street.

“That doesn’t mean we can’t apply for other grants,” Mayor Dave Roberts said. Roberts is also vice chairman of the board of directors for North County Transit District, which owns the land.

Roberts said even without the $6 million grant, the city is optimistic about developing the site. “The council wants to work with NCTD to come up with a plan that is consistent with our general plan,” he said.

The project, which has been in the works for almost 20 years, features retail shops, restaurants, boutique office space and housing. Plans also include a $19 million underground parking garage for the Amtrak and Coaster station that was to be partially funded by the grant from the state Department of Transportation.

To receive the $6 million, the city needed to submit approved plans to the department by June 30. It did not.

“That (grant) was lost back in April,” said Greg Shannon of Shea Properties, which is developing the site.

Roberts said the city received a letter from Shea Properties several weeks ago stating that the developer was working on its sixth redesign, but new plans have yet to be submitted.

“The ball is in their court,” Roberts said.

“We’re trying to figure out where to go from here,” Shannon said.
