SAN MARCOS — With the sound of earth tumbling off five shovels and applause from city staff along with several local residents, construction on Sunset Park officially began.
Located at the westernmost reaches of the city near the corner of Poinsettia and La Mirada, the 19-acre park will feature soccer fields, a canine play area, watersports play areas and the standard complement of playgrounds, picnic spots and walking tails. It will even afford a view of the Pacific Ocean.
“As we break ground here today, I am reminded of Frederick Law Olmstead ... who drew up New York’s Central Park,” Vice Mayor Hal Martin said. “He believed that parks are not just amenities but a necessity.”
Councilman Mike Preston echoed those sentiments, saying that while the neighborhoods of west San Marcos had enjoyed improved safety and city services, it hadn’t been until recently that the city addressed aesthetic issues.
“This park is special to me because years ago, when we annexed this area, the city made promises to the residents,” Preston said “Today we’re adding a park, so I think that’s an important promise delivered.”
Sunset Park will open to the public in fall 2009.
