Grave site of Surfside City's first resident
September 05, 2008
DEL MAR — Recently there was an inquiry about the grave site of William F. Foster — who is believed to have been the first permanent resident in the village — and whether it could be located.

Perhaps, but not likely.

In 1967, Foster’s tombstone was discovered near a tree overlooking the San Dieguito Lagoon. City officials who inspected it reported it was in an excellent condition.

Inscribed in the monument are the words, “In memory of William F. Foster died July 19, 1881.” And this epitaph “Both young and old, oh death, must yield to thee, and day by day the mighty arm we see, in vain the tear, in vain the heartfelt sign, all that are born to live are born to die.”

According to the late Ken Reiley, considered to be an astute village historian, Foster was a farmer whose ranch included the area now covered by the fairgrounds and the track.

His grave was west of I-5 on land that was farmed by Walter Conley, whose family operated a dairy.

With the restoration of the lagoon, the tombstone may be uncovered. Or maybe it has already.
